Overview
The G2 Axle and Gear 4-XJ6-456 is a front and rear 4.56 ring and pinion kit for the 1984–2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), with a Dana 30 short front and a Chrysler 8.25 rear axle. The kit covers the parts needed for a gear swap.
The kit includes matched master installation kits for both axles. The gears are made from computer heat treated 8620 steel to O.E. specs, double shot peened and double lapped, with a limited lifetime warranty.

Planning a gear swap
A gear swap touches more than the ring and pinion. Pinion depth and bearing preload set how the gears mesh, and backlash must be checked with the carrier installed. Look at the carrier bearings, the pinion seal and the axle shafts while the axle is open, since those parts are often replaced during the same job. A locking or limited slip differential changes how the gears wear, so note what is in the carrier before you start.
Plan for gear oil and break-in when the job is finished. Use the gear oil type recommended for your axle, and fill it to the correct level before driving. Early miles should be gentle while the gears seat, and the pattern and noise should be checked after the first drive. A tooth pattern that looks off or a whine that changes with load means the setup should be checked again.

The 4-XJ6-456 does not cover an XJ with a reverse-cut Dana 30 front, a Dana 35 rear, or other Jeep models. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.
Installation notes
Pinion depth, preload and backlash must be set on both axles using the master installation kits. The front carrier should be 3.73 and up. A trained installer is the usual choice for gear setup and break-in.
