Driveline check before install
An outer axle shaft transfers torque from the differential to the wheel hub, so the shaft takes the full twisting load of the drivetrain under power. Shafts with more splines and a heavier section handle high torque better, but the shaft is only one part of the chain. The U-joint, hub, bearings and carrier all need to match the new shaft, or the weak point simply moves to another part.
Clips hold the shaft in place inside the hub, and full circle clips are the usual choice when the shaft is machined for them. Inspect the splines for twisting or rounding, look for cracks near the shoulder, and check the seal for leaks at the carrier. A shaft that clicks, vibrates on acceleration or leaves grease on the brake side should be inspected before continuing to drive.
