Overview
The Dana Spicer 44895 is a pinion oil seal for the rear Dana 44 axle and an OE replacement part. The old Dana part number 39118 is a cross-reference for it. A pinion seal keeps gear oil inside the differential where the pinion shaft enters the housing.
Spotting a worn pinion seal
A pinion seal works against the yoke or flange where the pinion shaft exits the housing. Over time the seal lip hardens, and gear oil begins to seep along the shaft. Leaks often show first as dark oil on the inside of the rear wheel or on the housing below the pinion.
Before fitting a new seal, check the yoke or flange surface for grooves or pitting, since a rough surface wears a new lip quickly. Pinion seal work usually means checking pinion preload too, so plan time for the bearing check. Keep the housing clean, and refill to the correct gear oil level after the job so the new seal runs in oil rather than dry.
- Look for oil on the brake backing plate
- Check the yoke for grooves before fitting
- Recheck the oil level after the first drive

Vehicle fitment
The seal is made for the rear Dana 44 axle, and the Universal Fit label does not identify a vehicle. Confirm your rear axle matches before use, and check year, model and trim before ordering.
Installation notes
Pinion seal replacement usually involves removing the pinion nut and checking pinion bearing preload. A technician familiar with Dana 44 axles should handle that work.
