Rebuilding versus replacing a pump
A repair kit makes sense when the pump body and cover are still flat and free of deep grooves, and the worn parts are the gear, shaft or plunger. Symptoms of a worn pump include low oil pressure, a ticking or knocking noise from the bottom end, and a pressure gauge that drops once the engine is hot. Before buying a kit, check whether the housing is cracked or badly scored, because those faults cannot be repaired with new internal parts.
Rebuilding a pump takes care. Clearances between the gears and the housing must be right, and the pressure relief spring and plunger should move freely. A weak relief spring can cause low pressure even when the gears are new, so inspect it along with the rest of the kit before assembly.
