The Crown Automotive J8128163 is a liftgate latch and cables assembly for the 1976–1986 Jeep CJ7 with a hard top. It is a direct-fit replacement for the latch and cable components on that hard top liftgate.

Latch and cable adjustment
The latch and cables work together to hold the hard top liftgate closed. Cables stretch over the years, and the latch mechanism can gather road grime and seize. When the latch does not catch cleanly or the liftgate rattles while driving, the cables and latch are usually the first things to check.
Before replacing the set, clean the latch and lubricate its moving parts. Check that the striker lines up with the latch, and look at the cables for fraying or kinks near their ends. Hard top seals also affect how the liftgate closes, so inspect the gasket around the opening. If the cable length looks wrong after the new assembly is in place, the routing may need a closer look before the liftgate is used.
