Before you install
The lower steering shaft carries steering effort from the column to the steering gear, so play or looseness here shows up quickly at the wheel. On a power steering CJ, the lower shaft works alongside the pump-assisted gear, and wear in its joints can make the assist feel vague on center. Inspect the splines, the pinch bolts and the universal joint for play before blaming the gear.
When the shaft comes out, replacing worn coupling parts is a common step. Check the steering gear input, the pitman arm connection and the drag link ends at the same time, since they carry the same loads. Clean the new shaft, apply the recommended grease to the joints during assembly and re-check pinch bolt tightness after the first few drives.
- Play at the steering wheel when centered
- Clunks when turning from a stop
- Vibration felt through the wheel
- Cracked or stiff boot at the coupling
