Tank and gauge basics
A fuel sending unit combines a float, a resistance track and the mounting plate that seals the tank. As the float rises and falls with fuel, the gauge reading changes. Because the reading depends on the float’s travel, a sender that sticks or has a bent arm will give false readings even when the tank is full.
