Overview
The Crown Automotive 53003341X is a fuel sending unit for the 4.2L 6-cylinder Jeep Wrangler (YJ) with a 20 gallon fuel tank. It fits 1987–1990 Wrangler YJ models and needs some hand modification before it works in that tank.
The required changes are to lengthen the pickup tube, shorten the breather tube, and cut the plug from the old unit so it can be spliced onto the new one. Plan that work before installing.
Key features
- Fuel sending unit for the 4.2L 6-cylinder engine
- Written for a 20 gallon fuel tank
- It fits the 1987–1990 Jeep Wrangler (YJ) in Base, Islander, Laredo, S, Sahara and Sport trims.
- Crown Automotive part number 53003341X with UPC 848399041811
Checking the float and tube work
A fuel sending unit has two jobs in the tank: it moves fuel to the pump through the pickup tube, and its float arm signals the level to the gauge. On a Wrangler YJ, the float arm rides on the fuel surface, so any change to tube length or position alters how the unit sits in the tank. Measure the tank depth and the new tube length before cutting anything, and dry-fit the parts with the unit outside the tank.
Modified units deserve extra care at the splice. Use fuel-rated hose and clamps, and make sure the joint cannot pull apart when the tank is low. Inspect the float arm for bends and check that it moves freely through its full travel before reinstalling. A gauge that reads wrong after installation often points back to float travel or a loose connection rather than the sender itself.
- Fuel-rated hose and clamps for any splice
- Free float arm travel through full range
- Tank gasket replaced with the sending unit
- Battery disconnected during all tank work
