Pinion seal care
The pinion seal keeps gear oil in where the driveshaft yoke enters the differential. Leaks usually show as a dark film around the pinion yoke or drips at the front of the axle housing. A worn seal can let fluid drop low enough to starve the pinion bearings, which is why small leaks are worth fixing early.
When replacing a flanged seal, check the yoke surface for grooves or rust where the lip rides, because a damaged surface will wear a new seal quickly. Use a seal driver rather than a hammer to avoid tilting the seal. Refill the axle with the lubricant named in the service manual after the seal is in and the yoke nut is torqued.
- Check the fluid level before and after the job
- Inspect the yoke for grooves or pitting
- Clean the housing face before fitting
