Overview
The Crown Automotive 83504946 is a pinion oil seal for the Model 35 rear axle, which is the Dana 35. It is a direct fit replacement. The seal sits where the pinion shaft enters the rear differential housing.
The seal’s application is the Model 35 rear axle, and that axle type sets the fit.

Pinion seal installation basics
A pinion seal keeps gear oil in the rear housing where the pinion shaft enters. Because the shaft rotates under load, the seal lip wears over time and oil seeps along the yoke. Before pulling the old seal, mark the pinion nut position and check the yoke for grooves, since a grooved yoke tears a new seal fast. Clean the bore and lightly oil the new seal lip before pressing it in.
Use a seal driver so the seal seats square and sits at the right depth. Tighten the pinion nut to the axle’s own torque value, not a guess, and set the pinion preload carefully if the bearings were disturbed. A worn pinion bearing can also leak oil or cause noise, so check for play when the nut is off.
- Mark the pinion nut position before removal
- Check the yoke for grooves
- Set the seal with a driver, not a hammer
