Surface mount considerations
Surface mounting puts the lamp body on the outside of the panel, so the mounting surface must be flat and strong enough to hold it under vibration. Clean and dry the surface before attaching the lamp, and use fasteners suited to the mount design. A flat, stable panel reduces rattle and keeps the lamp from shifting after bumps.
Because the wiring sits on the outside, route it inside a loom, keep it clear of heat and sharp edges, and leave a small service loop at the lamp. Surface mounts sit closer to mud and debris than recessed lamps, so check the seal around the cable entry after washing or trail use. Look for cracked lenses, loose fasteners and chafed harness sheathing during routine checks.
