Description

Overview

The Alloy USA 15103 is a passenger side rear axle shaft for the Ford 8.8, with 31 splines. It fits 1987–1996 Ford Bronco and F-150 models along with E-150, E-250 and 1993–1995 F-150 Lightning applications.

The shaft is made from 1541H or 4140 steel, depending on the application. It is heat-treated and induction hardened to about twice the tensile strength of stock, and up to 35% stronger.

Key features

  • Passenger side rear position
  • Ford 8.8 axle with 31 splines
  • 1541H or 4140 steel, depending on application
  • Heat-treated and induction hardened

Bearings and seal replacement

A rear axle shaft works with the bearing and seal at the hub end, so the stock components often come off with it. Because bearings, seals and studs are not included, inspect them when the axle is pulled. Look for play in the bearing, leaking seal oil, or stripped or damaged studs before reinstalling.

Splined shafts wear at the spline fit, so compare the spline count and shaft length with the removed part before fitting. Clean the axle tube and retainer surfaces, and use fresh gasket material where the housing requires it. Retorque hub and bearing fasteners after the first few miles of driving.

  • Check bearing play before reinstalling
  • Inspect seal lip for wear
  • Match spline count to the stock shaft

Questions & Answers

Does the Alloy USA 15103 fit a 1992 Ford F-150?

Yes. It fits 1987–1996 Ford F-150 models in Custom, Eddie Bauer, Special, XL, XLT and XLT Lariat trim, which covers 1992. It is the passenger side rear right unit for the Ford 8.8 with 31 splines.

Is this a driver side or passenger side shaft?

It is a passenger side shaft, the rear right unit for the Ford 8.8 axle, with 31 splines. Confirm the side you are replacing before ordering.

Are bearings and seals included?

No. Bearings, seals and studs are not included, so they need to come from the stock axle or another source. The shaft is made from 1541H or 4140 steel, heat-treated and induction hardened.

How do I tell if the axle shaft is worn?

Watch for a clunk when accelerating or braking, vibration at speed, or grease and oil on the inside of the wheel. A bent or twisted shaft can also cause vibration. Inspect the spline ends and the bearing area before deciding whether to replace it.
