Description

Overview

The Alloy USA 12129 is a Dana 30 standard front axle kit made from 4340 chromoly, for the 1972–1983 Jeep CJ5, the 1976–1983 CJ7 and the 1981 Jeep Scrambler.

The shafts are heat-treated twice and designed to be up to 40% stronger. The axle has 30 splines and no differential is included. The axle shafts carry a 10-year warranty, and the U-joints carry a 3-year warranty.

Key features

  • 4340 chromoly construction
  • Heat-treated twice for strength
  • Dana 30 standard front axle type
  • 30 spline axle

Choosing and fitting an axle

A Dana 30 front axle on a CJ carries the steering knuckles and wheel hubs, so the shafts and joints see constant load from the wheels. Upgrading to chromoly shafts helps with strength, but the gear ratio, differential and locking hubs decide how the axle performs off road. Plan the differential and gearing before the kit goes in, since they control the final drive.

Because no differential comes with this kit, the gears and carrier must be sourced separately and matched to the axle’s spline count and ratio. Inspect U-joints, seals and the spindle bearings at each oil change, and watch for grease leaks or clicking on turns. Worn joints are often replaced together with the axle, so check them while the axle is out.

Questions & Answers

Does the Alloy USA 12129 fit a 1976 to 1983 Jeep CJ7?

Yes. The kit fits 1976–1983 Jeep CJ7 models in Base, Golden Eagle, Golden Hawk, Laredo, Limited and Renegade trim. It also fits the 1972–1983 CJ5 and the 1981 Scrambler.

Does the kit include a differential?

No. The bullets say the kit includes no differential, so a differential has to come from elsewhere. The shafts are 4340 chromoly and the axle has 30 splines.

How much stronger are these shafts?

The shafts are designed to be up to 40% stronger because the 4340 chromoly is heat-treated twice. Actual strength will depend on the vehicle, the trail use and the parts it is paired with.

How often should U-joints be inspected on a CJ front axle?

Check them whenever the front end is serviced and after heavy off-road use. Look for play, dry joints and grease leaks, and replace any joint that binds or clunks, since worn joints can damage the shafts.

Do I need to change gearing when upgrading the axle shafts?

Not always, but changing axle parts can call for a gear ratio check. Confirm the differential and gear ratio match the new axle and your tire size before the first drive.
