Pick-up tube and sender fitting

The pick-up tube draws fuel from the lowest point of the tank into the pump, so its condition affects how well the engine receives fuel. An old tube can be clogged by sediment, cracked at its joints or bent where it meets the tank floor. When this assembly is fitted, the tube and sender should be checked together so the float and the pick-up sit at sensible heights above the tank bottom.

Sediment from older tanks often collects near the tube, so clean out the tank before fitting the new assembly. Inspect the interior for rust flakes and remove them, since they can block the tube inlet soon after installation. Replace the lock and O-ring together with the tube, because a worn seal can let fuel vapour escape at the tank opening.

  • Look for sediment at the tank bottom
  • Check tube joints for cracks
  • Keep the O-ring clean and undamaged

Questions & Answers

Does the MTS JWPT-1 include a fuel pick-up tube?

Yes. It includes a fuel pick-up tube assembly along with a lock and O-ring. Compare the tube with your existing one before fitting, since no further dimensions are given.

Will the JWPT-1 fit a 1976 Jeep Cherokee SJ?

Yes, 1976 falls within the 1974–1979 Cherokee (SJ) range. Check that your trim is one of the named options: Base, S or Wide Track. Confirm your vehicle's year before ordering.

Does the JWPT-1 cover a 1972 Jeep Wagoneer?

Yes, 1972 falls within the 1970–1979 Wagoneer (SJ) range. Trims named are Base, Custom and Limited. Confirm your trim against the fitment before ordering.

What signs point to a clogged pick-up tube?

Look for hesitation under load, stalling on hills, or fuel starvation that worsens when the tank is low. These symptoms can also come from a weak pump or a blocked filter, so check those first. Inspecting the tube inlet during the job is the most direct check.

Should the fuel tank be cleaned before a sender change?

It is a sensible step on an older vehicle. Rust and debris are often loosened by a sender change, and they can clog a new pick-up tube or fuel pump. Remove loose sediment before reassembly, and fit the sender once the interior looks clean.
