Light-duty axle basics
The light-duty Dana 44 uses lighter hubs and spindles than the full-size version, so the bearing sizes and seals are not interchangeable. Trucks that carry a light-duty front axle often see less load, but the bearings still wear with time, water and dirt. When the hub is apart, clean the spindle and check it for scoring before the new bearings go on.
Timken inner and outer bearings with a wheel bearing seal form the core of the job. Press the races squarely into the hub and pack the bearings with fresh grease. A new seal installed square keeps grease in and water out, which is what protects the new bearings over the long run.
