Description

Overview

It is a crossover U-joint that converts a Detroit 7260 series joint to a 1310 series joint. It is non-greasable, with inside and outside snap rings, and it is positioned at the front driveshaft at the front axle. It is a direct fit.

The joint is interchangeable with existing parts, so it can be fitted without a change in part number. It uses a computer-designed bearing plate and a manufacturing process that holds close tolerances.

The joint has a bearing cap diameter of 1.078 inches on the inside and 1.062 inches on the outside. The outside snap ring to snap ring measurement is 3.219 inches, and the inside snap ring to snap ring measurement is 2.125 inches. Check those dimensions against the joint you are replacing before ordering.

Key features

  • Converts a Detroit 7260 series joint to a 1310 series joint
  • Non-greasable design
  • Inside and outside snap rings
  • Front driveshaft at the front axle position
  • Interchangeable with existing parts, per Dana Spicer

Choosing and inspecting a U-joint

A U-joint lets the driveshaft carry power through an angle, and a crossover joint is used where the yoke and cross size differ between the driveshaft and the axle. Because this joint is non-greasable, its service life depends on keeping water and grit out of the bearing caps and on checking the joint at each inspection. Matching the joint to the driveline angle matters as much as matching the size.

Driveshaft joints often wear together, so inspecting the other joints in the driveline when one is replaced is a good habit. Worn snap rings, loose bearing caps or a clunk when shifting between drive and coast are signs to look for. Any vibration at highway speed that appears after a joint change should be checked before continuing, since it can point to driveline angles or balance.

  • Check the driveline angles when the front axle is lifted
  • Inspect the other U-joints during the same job
  • Replace the snap rings with the joint when they are worn

Questions & Answers

Will the 5-788X fit a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ?

Yes. It fits the 1994–1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ), so a 1996 ZJ is covered. Check the front driveshaft position before ordering.

Does this joint change part numbers when it replaces the 7260 joint?

Dana Spicer says its joints are interchangeable with existing parts and that there is no change in part numbers. The joint converts a Detroit 7260 series setup to a 1310 series joint.

Is the 5-788X greasable?

No. It is non-greasable and has inside and outside snap rings, so it is a sealed joint for a front driveshaft.

How can you tell a non-greasable U-joint is worn?

Look for play in the caps, clunking when shifting between drive and coast, or vibration at speed. Because the joint cannot be greased, a worn unit is replaced rather than serviced.

Should the other driveshaft joints be checked at the same time?

Yes. Joints in the same driveline tend to wear at a similar rate, so checking them during the job helps avoid a second repair soon after.
