Before installing a sealed U-joint
A sealed U-joint with a forged cross is meant to be installed once and left alone, with its seals doing the work that grease would otherwise handle. The cross carries the load between the yokes, so its bearing surfaces and snap ring grooves need to be clean and undamaged before the joint goes in. Proper preparation matters more with a joint that cannot be regreased later.
Measure the cup size and snap ring spacing on the old joint and compare them with the new one before assembly. Inspect the yokes for wear or cracks, and make sure the caps seat evenly. Torque the retainers to the axle service specification, and check the joint for free movement after assembly. Because there is no grease path, a joint that starts binding or making noise should be replaced rather than serviced.
