Overview
The Dana Spicer 5-188X is a 1480 series U-joint with a forged cross, an outside snap ring and a greasable bearing design. It is positioned at the rear driveshaft at the rear axle and is a direct fit for heavy-duty Chevrolet, GMC, Ford and Dodge trucks and vans.

Signs the joint is worn
A U-joint carries torque from the transmission output to the axle pinion while letting the driveshaft change angle as the suspension moves. The cross turns on needle bearings held in cups, so wear shows up as play in the joint rather than as a steady noise. Before replacing a joint, look for a clunk when shifting between drive and reverse, vibration that rises with road speed, and grease leaking past the seals.
Joints are commonly replaced in pairs or during a full driveshaft service, because a worn companion joint puts extra load on a new one. When fitting outside snap rings, seat each ring fully in its groove and tap the cups squarely so the cross is not forced. Keep the yokes aligned on reassembly and recheck the joint after the first few trail runs.
