Input seal wear and replacement
The input shaft seal sits where the drive shaft from the transmission enters the transfer case, so it works against lubricant pressure every time the vehicle moves. Over the years the lip hardens and the shaft surface can wear a groove. Small leaks at this point often show as fluid on the underside of the case or dust sticking to a wet patch.
When replacing the seal, take the time to clean the bore and check the shaft for scoring or rust. A rough surface can tear a new seal quickly. Install the seal square and seat it with a tool that presses on the outer edge, not the lip. Fill the case to the correct level once the job is complete and check again after the first drive.
