Living with rubber pan gaskets
Rubber pan gaskets are forgiving when they are fitted correctly, but they do not tolerate old, hardened pan flanges well. Before installing, check the pan for bent edges and remove any hardened material left by an earlier gasket. A rubber gasket that is pinched or doubled over at a corner can leak even when the bolts are tight.
Rubber also ages with heat and oil exposure, so an older gasket may look intact but feel stiff or brittle. Check it for cracks at the corners and for flattened sections that no longer rebound.
