Side plates and shackle wear
A side plate holds the shackle links together and carries load when the leaf spring moves. Over time the plate can bend, crack or wear where the bolts pass through it, and the shackle may start to rattle or drift out of alignment.
When replacing a plate, check the shackle pin, bushings and mounting bolts at the same time. A plate that fits loosely can transfer stress to the rest of the assembly. Make sure both sides of the shackle are matched so the spring stays square in the hanger.
- Inspect the plate for cracks around bolt holes
- Check the shackle pin for wear or looseness
- Replace both plates when one side is worn
- Confirm the spring and hanger are aligned after installation
