Sealing SJ-era oil pans
Oil pans on SJ-era and older Jeeps were built around simpler sealing surfaces, and years of heat and road grime can leave the flange uneven. Scrape off old gasket material with a plastic tool and check the pan for bends before installing a new set. A pan that has been dropped or damaged may need repair before it will seal.
Pan gasket sets are often replaced with the oil pump pickup tube seal and drain plug washer, since those parts are reached at the same time. Set the gasket in place dry and check fit around each bolt hole first, then tighten the pan bolts evenly across the pan to avoid pulling one corner out of line.
