Gasket care at install
Cork pan gaskets depend on a flat, clean sealing surface. Before fitting one, scrape off old cork and gasket cement, then wipe the pan rail and block face with a clean rag. Small nicks can let oil weep even when the gasket is new, so look closely at the rail. Cork compresses more readily than rubber, so the pan bolts should be tightened in a crisscross pattern to draw the pan down evenly.
Cork also loses resilience with age and repeated heat cycles. Oil that appears along the pan seam after a drive usually points to a seal that has hardened or shifted. Check the pan bolts for looseness and the seam for damp residue after the engine has warmed and cooled.
