Signs the steering gear needs work
Manual steering gears wear through the internal parts that link the wheel to the steering arm, so play tends to build slowly. Early signs include extra wheel movement before the front tires respond, a clunk when turning, and steering that drifts off center. Catching these changes early keeps the rest of the steering system from wearing faster.
Check for fluid seepage around the gear housing and the input shaft seal. A dry gear that still feels tight may be fine, but a leaking gear needs attention. When the gear is opened for repair, inspect the linkage, tie rods and drag link at the same time, since worn parts often wear together.
- Measure play at the steering wheel
- Look for leaks around the gear housing
- Inspect linkage when the gear is opened
