Replacing the timing gasket
A timing cover gasket is a small part with a big job: it keeps engine oil and coolant from creeping out at the front of the block. Because it is usually replaced with the cover off, the work is best done with the cover, timing set and front seal all accessible at once.
Clean both sealing faces until they are bare metal, and make sure the bolt holes are free of old gasket material and oil. Set the new gasket in place dry unless the instructions call for sealant, then tighten the bolts gradually in a crisscross order. Recheck the seal after the engine warms up.
