Overview
The Crown Automotive 647693 is a 41.5 inch worm shaft for steering gears on Jeep CJ3, CJ5 and CJ6 models and Willys CJ-2, CJ-3, CJ-5 and CJ-6 models, covering 1946 to 1966.
A worm shaft is the input shaft of a steering gear, the part the steering wheel turns to drive the sector gear. The tube is not included, so a full worm shaft and tube assembly must be sourced separately.

Worm shaft and steering gear service
The worm shaft is the input side of the steering gear. Turning the steering wheel rotates the worm, which drives the sector gear and moves the pitman arm. Worn worm bearings or a bent shaft can cause play at the wheel, and a tired shaft often shows up as a notchy or rough feel when turning off center.
Because the tube and shaft run inside the gear housing, replacing the worm shaft usually means opening the steering gear. Before removal, note how the tube and shaft line up and mark the housing so the reassembly matches. Clean the bearing surfaces, inspect the seals, and check the gear teeth for pitting before reassembly.
- Check steering play with the front wheels off the ground
- Look for oil around the steering box seal
- Replace worn bearings when the gear is open
