Driveshaft and yoke flange basics
A yoke flange is the part that the driveshaft bolts to, and it transfers rotation from the driveshaft into the rear axle pinion. Flanges can wear at the bolt holes and at the pinion nut contact area, which may cause vibration and a shudder at speed. Check the flange face for grooves and the bolt holes for elongation whenever the driveshaft comes off.
When the flange is replaced, the pinion nut and pinion seal are usually disturbed, so inspect both at the same time. Driveline angles and the condition of the U-joints also affect how smooth the shaft runs after the job.
