Inner seal replacement tips
An inner axle shaft seal keeps lubricant in the housing and keeps dirt out where the shaft passes through. Because it sits behind the wheel and the axle shaft, leaks often show up as oil on the inside of the wheel or on the brake components. Before removing the shaft, drain or contain the lubricant and mark the seal orientation so the new seal goes in the same way.
Replace the seal together with the shaft bearing or retainer if they look worn, because a worn bearing can push lubricant past a new seal. Clean the bore thoroughly and check the seal surface on the shaft for grooves before installation, since a rough surface shortens seal life.
- Look for lubricant on the inside of the wheel
- Check the shaft surface for grooves before installing
- Drain or contain fluid before removing the shaft
