Overview
The Dana Spicer Dana 44 Inner Axle Seal, part 620257, is a front inner seal for the Dana 44. The seal sits between the axle housing and the shaft, keeping gear oil in the axle tube.
Inner seals like this one sit where the shaft meets the housing, so they are easy to overlook during a rebuild.
Signs the seal needs replacing
Oil on the inside of the wheel, or a dark film on the brake backing plate, is often the first sign that an inner seal has worn. Gear oil that is low between service intervals can point to the same leak. Because the seal runs against the shaft every time the axle turns, even a small groove in the shaft can let oil past the lip over time.
When the axle is apart, look at the lip contact area on the shaft and the seal bore in the housing. Clean both surfaces and inspect them before the new seal is installed. A seal that has been removed should not be reused, since the lip takes a set once it has been pulled.
- Oil on the inside of the front wheel
- Low gear oil between services
- Grooves or rust on the shaft where the lip rides
