Swing clearance and care
A tire gate that swings with the tailgate has to clear the bumper, the tail lamps and the license plate area at every angle. Before using it, open and close the gate slowly with the spare mounted and watch for contact with the bumper edges or the light housings. Keep the gate’s path clear of cargo and tow equipment.
Steel gates with powder coat finishes handle daily use well, but chips in the coating can start rust at the edges. Touch up small chips promptly and wash off road salt. Spherical bearings at the mounts need periodic checks for play, since loose bearings change the swing and can rattle over rough roads. Tighten fasteners after the first few trail outings.
