Overview
The Trail Gear 130265-1-KIT is a Rock Assault ram steering assist kit for the 1984-1995 Toyota 4Runner and the 1979-1995 Toyota Pickup. A steering ram assists the steering linkage, and this kit is built around formed brackets that make installation straightforward. It is a direct fit for the vehicles named in the fitment section below.
Trail Gear describes its brackets as specially formed. Many kits on the market include no mounts or only generic tabs that need fitting, while these brackets are formed for the ram installation. Each bracket is made from heavy-duty 1/4-inch plate steel for extra strength. Once the steering box has been tapped, Trail Gear says installation of the ram takes about one hour.
Key features
- Specially formed mounting brackets rather than generic tabs.
- Brackets made from heavy-duty 1/4-inch plate steel.
- Ram comes with seals, rod ends and a ram bracket.
- Includes hoses, JIC 90 degree elbows and steering box fittings.
- Mounting hardware included; installation takes about one hour after the steering box is tapped.
Working with a steering ram
A steering ram works alongside the existing linkage rather than replacing it. When the wheel is turned, the ram adds force to the steering system, which can make heavy steering lighter on larger tires and on uneven trail surfaces. Because the ram carries load through every turn and impact, its mounts and the linkage it connects to take real stress over time.
Before buying, think about the rest of the steering system. Tie rod ends, drag link joints and the steering box share the work the ram adds, and worn joints can make assist feel uneven. Inspect those parts first. After installation, check the hose runs for rubbing and seepage at each fitting, and recheck the mounting bolts after the first few trail runs.
- Inspect tie rod ends and drag link joints before installation
- Look for wear at the ram rod ends and seals
- Recheck bracket bolts after early off-road use
