Leaf spring shock basics
On a leaf spring suspension the axle moves in an arc as the springs flex, and the shock must follow that movement through its mounts. Twin-tube shocks work by moving fluid through valves, so their damping depends on the valving and on how the mounts keep the shock aligned during travel.
A loop-to-loop setup puts the eyes at both ends of the shock, which means the bushings take rotation and side load. Check each eye for play or cracking, and make sure the shock does not rub the frame or axle at full compression. Bushing wear often shows up first as a knock over small bumps.
