Description

Overview

The Rubicon Express RE1172 is a sway bar disconnect adapter bracket kit for the 1996–1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) and the 1997–2006 Jeep Wrangler (TJ). It mounts Rubicon sway bar disconnects, or any other straight end link with dual shock eye style bushings, to the factory Jeep front sway bar.

A sway bar disconnect lets the front sway bar be unlinked for more wheel articulation on the trail. This bracket kit supplies the mounting point, and its offset lower mount positions the link for proper alignment.

Key features

  • Mounts Rubicon sway bar disconnects or any straight end link with dual shock eye style bushings
  • Built to attach to the factory front sway bar
  • Offset lower mount for proper alignment
  • Mounting hardware included

Front end setup for disconnects

A disconnect lets the front sway bar work independently of the axle, so the axle can move further over uneven ground. Once the bar is unlinked, the vehicle leans more in turns and feels less stable at speed, so drivers usually reconnect for road use. Choose a disconnect that engages and releases easily, since a stiff unit is harder to use on the trail.

Mounting points on the factory bar take the load that the disconnect transfers, so inspect the bar and its brackets for cracks before installation. Offset lower mounts change the link angle, and the angle affects how the link moves through its range. Plan the install with the bar, links and bushings in hand, and check that the link has clearance from the tie rod and steering components.

  • Inspect factory bar brackets for cracks before mounting
  • Check steering and tie rod clearance through full travel
  • Replace bushings that show splits or heavy wear

Questions & Answers

Will the RE1172 fit a 1999 Jeep Wrangler TJ?

Yes. The 1997–2006 Jeep Wrangler (TJ) fits, so a 1999 model is included. Match the year, model and trim to your vehicle before ordering.

Does this kit fit a Jeep Wrangler LJ?

No, it does not fit the Wrangler LJ. It fits the 1997–2006 Wrangler TJ and the 1996–1998 Grand Cherokee ZJ only.

What is a sway bar disconnect adapter for?

It lets a sway bar disconnect or a straight end link attach to the factory front sway bar. Disconnecting the bar gives the front axle more freedom to articulate on uneven ground, which is the usual reason for a disconnect.

Is the lower mount included with the RE1172?

Yes. The kit includes an offset lower mount that positions the link for proper alignment, along with mounting hardware. Both come in the one bracket kit.

Can I run a disconnected sway bar on the street?

It is not ideal for regular road driving. Disconnected, the bar no longer resists body roll, so cornering and braking feel different. Reconnect the bar for daily driving and use the disconnect mainly on trails.
