Front shock basics
The front shocks control the motion of the front axle as the wheels move over bumps and dips. They also help keep steering steady under braking and at speed, so a worn front shock often shows up as wandering or a loose feel on the road.
Stem and eyelet mounts use different hardware at each end, so both ends must be checked before installing. Look at the bushings, washers and nuts, and replace any that are cracked or flattened. A shock boot keeps the shaft clean, and a torn boot is a reason to inspect the seal.
Front shocks are often replaced in pairs so both sides damp the same way. Mixing an old shock with a new one can make the vehicle pull to one side in corners.
- Check both mount ends before installing
- Inspect the boot for tears
- Replace front shocks in pairs
