Overview
The Rubicon Express RE9960 is the rear main assembly for the 1993 to 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) long arm suspension system. It is the key component at the rear of the ZJ long arm system.
The assembly provides the mounting point for the rear control arms. It is designed for trail use without restricting the flex of the ZJ unibody.

Long arm mounts and flex
Long arm suspensions replace leaf springs with control arms that locate the axle. The rear main assembly is where those arms attach to the body, so it carries braking, acceleration and cornering loads, along with the forces from articulating over obstacles. Its mounting points should be checked any time the arms or bushings are changed.
Because the ZJ uses a unibody, the mount needs to flex with the body rather than fight it. Keep the bushings lubricated, inspect the bolts after the first trips on rough trails, and look for hairline cracks around the mount or where it meets the body. A mount that shows binding or clunking usually points to a bushing or fastener that needs attention.
