Description

Overview

The Rubicon Express RE9950 is the front main assembly for the 1993 to 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) long arm suspension system. It is the key component at the front of the ZJ long arm system.

The assembly provides the mounting point for the front control arms and replaces the factory transmission crossmember. It is designed for trail use without restricting the flex of the ZJ unibody. Welding is required.

Key features

  • Front main assembly for the ZJ long arm system
  • Mounting point for the front control arms
  • Replaces the factory transmission crossmember
  • Designed for trail use
  • Does not restrict the flex of the ZJ unibody
  • Black powder coat finish

Preparing the frame for welding

Front main assemblies are welded into the frame, so the quality of the weld and the preparation of the mounting surfaces decide how well the long arm system holds up. Before welding, clean paint, rust and mill scale from the joint, and confirm the assembly sits square and at the correct height before tacking it in place.

After welding, let the joints cool naturally and inspect every weld for cracks, undercut or porosity. Protect the bare metal with paint or a compatible coating, since heat and grinding can remove the factory finish. Recheck alignment of the control arms and the transmission support once the suspension is back together.

  • Clean the joints to bare metal before welding
  • Tack the assembly and check it is square
  • Grind and inspect welds after cooling
  • Repaint exposed metal to limit rust

Questions & Answers

Does the RE9950 replace the transmission crossmember?

Yes. It replaces the factory transmission crossmember. Plan how the transmission will be supported while the factory part is removed and the new assembly is welded in.

Which Jeep does the RE9950 fit?

It fits the ZJ long arm system, which covers the Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) from 1993 to 1998. Confirm your year and model before ordering the front main assembly.

Does the RE9950 require welding?

Yes. Welding is required for the front main assembly. Have it welded by a qualified fabricator, and check the rest of the long arm kit for any other welded parts.

How should the welds be inspected after the front main assembly is installed?

Let the joints cool, then look closely for cracks, undercut, gaps and porosity along each bead. Repair any defect before driving, and recoat the bare metal so rust does not start at the weld edges.
