Overview
The Rubicon Express RE1461 is a rear leaf spring with bushings for the Jeep Cherokee XJ, sized for a 5.5 inch lift. The Rear XJ 5.5 Inch application covers the 1984-2001 Cherokee. It uses Extreme-Duty design features, with rubber bushings replaced by polyurethane for less noise and squeaking.
The lift height range is 5 to 6.99 inches. It is a single rear spring with polyurethane bushings included. Running 5.5 inch XJ leaf springs requires the RE2705 boomerang shackle for more clearance. The springs are sold individually.

Bushings and shackle care
Rear leaf springs carry the axle, control its side-to-side position and absorb road shock. Over time the leaves can sag, the center bolt can loosen and the bushings can wear, which shows up as wandering, clunking or a rear end that sits uneven. Inspecting the eye bushings, U-bolts and shackle pins at regular service intervals catches these problems early.
A taller spring changes how the axle moves through its travel. Shackle geometry, shock length and brake line length can all be affected, so check the shock mounts and brake hoses after the install. Pairing the springs with a properly matched shackle and checking the driveline angles helps keep the axle working within its normal range.
Polyurethane bushings are firmer than rubber, so the ride may feel more direct and some noise can be heard on rough surfaces. Lubricate the bushing sleeves where the design allows, and re-torque the U-bolts after the first few drives.
