Rear parking brake basics
A rear parking brake shoe is a friction part that the hand lever or pedal presses against the drum. It is used mostly when the vehicle is parked, so lining wear is slow, but the adjuster, springs and cable can seize from rust. When the shoes are changed, clean the backing plate and check that each moving part returns freely.
Because this set covers two wheels, both sides are normally changed in the same visit. Keep grease off the friction surface, and adjust both sides evenly so the parking brake holds on a slope. After fitting, test the brake at low speed on a gentle grade before regular use.
