Parking brake shoes and drums
Emergency brake shoes expand against a drum to hold the vehicle when the parking brake is set. Because they are used only occasionally, they can be overlooked, yet the lining can glaze or the shoes can seize on the anchor if the cable is not free. Inspect the shoes during any transfer case or rear axle service and look for contamination from oil or grease.
Replace shoes in pairs so both sides grip the same way, and check the springs, hold down parts and adjuster before fitting new linings. A worn or glazed lining reduces holding power on a slope, so test the brake on a safe grade after reassembly. Keep the drum surface clean, avoid getting oil on the lining during installation, and clean the backing plate so the shoes move freely before closing up the assembly.
