Parking brake shoe wear
The emergency brake shoes sit inside the rear drum and expand when the lever or cable is applied. Over time the friction material thins, the springs weaken and the adjuster can seize, so the lever travels further before the brake holds. Worn shoes can also leave lining dust that reaches the drum surface.
When the shoes are replaced, inspect the drum, the springs, the adjuster and the hold-down hardware. Replacing the hardware along with the shoes helps the new shoes seat evenly. Check that the lever returns fully and that both sides hold at the same setting.
