Overview
The Power Stop Autospecialty B589 is a rear drum brake shoe set for Toyota trucks and SUVs: the 1987–2000 4Runner, 1987–1995 Pickup, 1993–1998 T100, 1995–2002 Tacoma and 2000–2003 Tundra.
Power Stop says Autospecialty shoes are custom-designed for a specific vehicle and meet or exceed OEM specifications. The semi-metallic shoes are post-cured for stronger braking and a shorter break-in.

Keeping Toyota rear shoes adjusted
Toyota truck rear drums use a self-adjuster that takes up slack as the shoes wear, so a new set should be checked after the first few stops for proper contact. Lift the vehicle and rotate each drum by hand to confirm the shoes move freely and the adjuster is not binding. A rear brake that needs frequent pedal pumping often points to a stuck adjuster or a seized wheel cylinder rather than the shoe set itself.
Because the B589 is ground to the drum, a fresh set seats quickly, but the drum surface still matters. Clean the backing plate of dust and grease, and keep lubricant off the lining. When the drums are older, light resurfacing or replacement keeps new shoes from wearing unevenly on high spots.
- Shoes that drag after a stop
- Uneven lining wear from side to side
- Grease on the lining surface

Installation notes
Because the shoes ship with hardware and are ground to the drum, a standard rear brake service needs only the shoe set. Check the drums while the shoes are off. The semi-metallic lining is post-cured for a shorter break-in, and the chamfered edges help keep the brakes quiet from the first stops.
