Description

Overview

The Power Stop Autospecialty B505 is a set of semi-metallic rear drum brake shoes for the 1979–1995 Toyota Pickup, the 1995–2004 Toyota Tacoma and the 1998–2003 Toyota RAV4.

Autospecialty shoes are made for professional installers and are custom designed for a specific vehicle. The semi-metallic friction material is post-cured, which gives more brake power and a shorter break-in period.

Key features

  • Body made of 100% new steel finished in rust-resistant black coating
  • Entirely asbestos-free and copper-free construction
  • Semi-metallic lining, post-cured to shorten break-in
  • Innovative chamfers designed to prevent brake chatter and noise
  • Arc ground precisely so the shoe matches the drum
  • Includes all hardware for the rear brake
  • Power Stop designs the shoe to meet or exceed OEM specifications
  • Covered by Power Stop’s 3-year/36,000-mile warranty

Setting up new rear shoes

Rear drum shoes need a clean setup to work evenly. Wipe the backing plate, check the drum for scoring, and confirm that the shoe edges sit square in the hardware before the drum goes back on.

Adjust the shoes so the drum turns with light contact, then test the brake pedal with the wheel off the ground if possible. A first set of gentle stops lets the lining settle, which helps avoid squeal and uneven pull.

When pulling or grabbing shows up after a shoe change, look at the wheel cylinder, the springs and the lining contact before blaming the shoes. A quick inspection each time the drums are open keeps the job reliable over time.

  • Clean the backing plate
  • Check drum surface for scoring
  • Verify spring hook-up
  • Make gentle first stops

Toyota 4Runner, T100 and Tundra applications are not in this list, and the front brakes are not covered because these are rear shoes. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.

Installation notes

Power Stop includes the hardware with the shoes, and the arc-ground shoe is intended to seat on the drum without further machining. Check the drum for wear and scoring when replacing the shoes. The semi-metallic friction material is post-cured by Power Stop so that it settles in faster, but a new set of shoes still needs a gentle first few stops.

Questions & Answers

Which Toyotas does the Power Stop B505 fit?

The B505 fits the 1979–1995 Toyota Pickup, the 1995–2004 Toyota Tacoma and the 1998–2003 Toyota RAV4 rear drum brakes. Confirm your year, model and trim before ordering.

Is the B505 a front or rear brake shoe?

It is a rear brake shoe for drum brakes, not for front disc or drum brakes. The shoe sits in the rear drum assembly and is sold for that position only.

What are the B505 shoes made of?

The shoes are made from 100% new steel with a black rust-resistant coat, and the semi-metallic friction material is post-cured. The steel body resists rust in everyday use.

Does the B505 include hardware?

Yes. The set includes all hardware for the rear brake, so a separate hardware kit is not needed. Check the drum for wear before installing the shoes.

Should the wheel cylinder be replaced with new shoes?

Replace it if it leaks or the piston moves stiffly, since a weak cylinder can undo the work of new shoes. Inspect the boots and the bore for corrosion while the drum is off.

Are these shoes suited to heavy braking?

They are semi-metallic and post-cured for more brake power and a shorter break-in. Heavy use still wears them, so inspect the lining regularly and avoid long downhill braking on worn shoes.
