Torque and reinstallation tips
Mainshaft nuts hold gears and synchronizers in place on the shaft, so a loose or stripped nut can cause gear noise, jumping out of gear, or damage to the parts behind it. Before removing the old nut, note how the gears and washers sit on the shaft. Replacing the nut is simplest when the shaft threads and the gear faces are clean and free of burrs.
Use a torque wrench and the torque figure in a service manual for your transmission rather than guessing. Many shops replace the nut together with any washers or lock tabs at the same time. If the threads show damage or the nut has been tightened repeatedly, replacing the shaft or the affected gear may be needed.
