Description

Overview

The Omix-ADA 16747.03 is a front disc brake caliper repair kit for the 1984–1989 Jeep Cherokee, 1982–1983 CJ5, 1982–1986 CJ7, 1982–1985 Scrambler and 1987–1989 Wrangler. The kit includes a piston, seal and boot.

The piston pushes the brake pad against the rotor, while the seal holds brake fluid inside the caliper and the boot keeps dirt out. When the original piston corrodes or the seal leaks, this kit can restore the caliper. It is a direct OE replacement built to original specifications. It is often chosen when the caliper body is sound but the piston or seals have failed. The fitment covers several early Jeep models that share a front caliper design. The kit carries a limited five year warranty.

Key features

  • Front disc brake caliper repair kit
  • Includes a piston, seal and boot
  • Direct OE replacement built to original specifications
  • Direct fit listing across five Jeep models
  • Limited five year warranty

Caliper seal and piston care

Piston corrosion is one of the most common reasons a caliper drags or pulls to one side, because the seal cannot slide cleanly over a pitted surface. A rebuild can restore smooth action, but only when the bore is clean and free of heavy scoring. Look at the piston face, the seal groove and the dust boot before choosing between a rebuild and a new caliper.

Boots keep grit and water out of the bore, and a cracked boot usually shows up as rust on the exposed part of the piston. Work in a clean space, lubricate seals with brake fluid rather than oil, and keep the parts covered until assembly. Fresh fluid from a sealed container is the safest choice when refilling after the work.

  • Use brake fluid, not oil, on seals
  • Keep parts covered during assembly
  • Inspect the boot for cracks

The kit is for front calipers only. Before ordering, match your year, model and trim.

Installation notes

Rebuilding a caliper with a piston, seal and boot opens the hydraulic system, so bleed the brakes afterward. Check the caliper bore for scoring or pitting, and compare the old piston, seal and boot with the new parts before assembly. Keep the bore and new parts free of dirt and oil during assembly.

Questions & Answers

What does the Omix-ADA 16747.03 kit include?

The kit includes a piston, a seal and a boot. It is a repair kit for a front disc brake caliper, not a complete caliper, so the caliper body is needed separately.

Which Jeeps does the 16747.03 fit?

It fits the 1984–1989 Cherokee, 1982–1983 CJ5, 1982–1986 CJ7, 1982–1985 Scrambler and 1987–1989 Wrangler. Before ordering, compare your year, model and trim with the fit above.

Is the 16747.03 for front or rear calipers?

It is for the front calipers. Rear calipers need a different kit, so confirm the axle position of your caliper before ordering and match the piston and boot to the old parts.

Will the 16747.03 fit a 1995 Jeep Wrangler?

No. The Wrangler is covered for 1987–1989 only, so a 1995 Wrangler is outside the fit. Verify the year and model before ordering the repair kit.

Should the caliper bracket be inspected during a rebuild?

Yes. Check the caliper mounting bracket, slide pins and boots for corrosion or binding, since a seized slide pin can cause uneven pad wear even after a fresh rebuild. Clean and lubricate the pins with brake-safe grease.
