Choosing the right muffler setup
A muffler is the last major restriction and noise control point in an exhaust system, so its inlet and outlet placement and tube diameter need to match the pipes feeding it. With a straight-through design, exhaust passes through a perforated core with a stainless mesh wrap and fiber packing, which shapes tone while keeping flow open. Before buying, measure the existing pipe diameter, the position of the inlet and outlet, and the distance to the frame and axle so the muffler sits clear of moving parts.
Over time, the most common wear points are the welds at the seams, the clamps and the hanger points, since road salt and heat work on them. Inspect the case for rust holes and check the packing if the tone changes or grows rough. Replacing the clamps and hangers at the same time as the muffler is a practical step, and re-checking the connections after the first few drives keeps leaks from developing.
