Before fitting a shock eye
Fitting a shock eye starts with the shock, not the vehicle. The eye has to match the pin or bolt it sits on, and it has to fit the bracket without being forced. Take a close look at the eye bore, the outer diameter and the length before you press the bushing into place.
Polyurethane shock eyes are firm and hold their shape well, which helps keep the shock aligned under load. The trade-off is that they do not absorb as much small vibration as rubber, so the bracket and fasteners see more movement. Clean the mating surfaces and check that the grommet seats evenly.
Once the shock is installed, work the suspension through its range and listen for binding, rubbing or new noises. Recheck the fasteners after the first few drives. A small change in sound often comes before a bushing fails.
- Match the eye size to the shock
- Clean the bracket before pressing in the bushing
- Recheck fasteners after the first drives
