Signs of a worn cylinder
Drum brakes rely on the wheel cylinder to push both brake shoes outward against the drum. Each time you press the pedal, fluid pressure moves the pistons, and when you release it the return springs pull the shoes back. A cylinder that seeps fluid past its seals can drop pressure at the wheel, so the pedal may sink or the vehicle may pull to one side under braking.
Inspect the cylinder whenever you service the rear brakes. Look for wet spots on the backing plate or inside the drum, and check the rubber boots for tears. Pull the drum and inspect the shoes, because fluid soaked into the linings means both the shoes and the cylinder need attention. When one cylinder on an axle has failed, replacing the opposite side at the same time is a sensible habit, since both have usually seen the same wear.
