Valve cover gasket and sealing
The valve cover gasket is the seal between the cover and the cylinder head, and it is a common source of oil seepage on the valve train. As a gasket ages it hardens and loses its grip, so an old seal should not be reused with a cover that has been removed. Clean both sealing surfaces with a plastic scraper rather than metal, so the head is not scored.
Tighten the cover fasteners evenly and in the sequence your service manual gives, because uneven pressure can pinch the gasket and cause a leak at one end. Check the plug tube seals and PCV connection while the cover is off, since they are often replaced at the same time.
