Key features

  • OE replacement style
  • Black plastic cover
  • Designed for the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine
  • Grommets sold separately

Grommets and cover installation

Grommets are the rubber seals that sit in the cover and hold the bolts or fasteners in position, and they are usually the first part to show age. A cracked or flattened grommet can let oil pass around the fastener even when the gasket is sound. Since they are sold separately, buy them before starting the job so the cover is not left off the engine.

Before installing, check the cover for warping, cracks at the mounting points and an intact sealing surface. Wipe the cylinder head clean and make sure no old gasket material remains. After the first few drives, look for seepage around the bolt holes, as heat can settle the seals a little.

  • Replace grommets that are cracked or flattened
  • Check the cover for warping
  • Clean the head surface before fitting
  • Recheck for seepage after the first few drives

Questions & Answers

What engine does the Crown 33003857 valve cover fit?

It is for the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. It fits 1983 to 1992 Jeep models, including Cherokee XJ, CJ5, CJ7, Comanche, Scrambler, Wagoneer SJ and Wrangler YJ.

Are grommets included with the cover?

No. Grommets are sold separately, so they are not included with the Crown Automotive valve cover 33003857. Have them available before installation.

Does this valve cover fit a Jeep Wrangler TJ?

No. It fits the 1987 to 1992 Wrangler YJ, but not the TJ generation. Cherokee models from 1993 onward are also outside its fit. Confirm fit for your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.

How can I tell if a valve cover or grommet is leaking?

Look for oil on the outside of the cover, around the bolt holes or along the seam. Oil residue on the cylinder head, or a burning smell after the engine warms up, can also point to a leak. Replace worn grommets when the cover is off.
