On a V8 timing job the front cover is only one piece of the work. Oil pan and front seal surfaces often come into play, and the engine’s timing set must be aligned correctly before the cover goes back on. Plan for extra time to clean the block face and check the crankshaft seal for wear.
Inspect the timing chain for slack and the sprockets for worn teeth whenever the cover is removed. Bolt the cover in stages and check for even compression of the gasket around the edges, since a small misalignment at the front can cause a persistent leak.
